Test your Omega 3 Level

Even More Late Breaking News!

Low levels of EPA and DHA is as strong a predictor of all cause mortality as smoking. This is a brand new study involving 2,240 people followed for 11 years. It was just published online ahead of print, by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. They found that low levels of the Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, is as big a risk factor for early death as smoking! People with low levels, defined as below 4 on the Omega-3 Index, had the same shortened life span as smokers. Those that had healthy levels, defined as an Omega-3 Index of 8 or higher, had lower risk of early death, similar to nonsmokers.

This study is one more reason why you want to know your Omega-3 level. To get you level tested, you have to pick a lab. Lots of labs can do it, but few labs know how to do it correctly. I recommend using the best lab: OmegaQuant. They know what they are doing, and they are the only lab I recommend.

Unfortunately, it is hard to get insurance to pay for this test. If you want this valuable information, you need to pay out of pocket.

This is the best test, from the best lab.

The Omega-3 Index Plus Test, from OmegaQuant is the test you want. They have a cheaper test, the Omega-3 Index, but it doesn't include the omega 6:3 ratio which is the main test you want. They also have a more expensive test, the Omega-3 Index Complete, but I think it contains information you don't need. The Omega-3 Index Plus Test does measure the Omega-3 index, which is the measurement looked at in the study above. You want to know if your Omega-3 Index is 8 or more, which is the healthy range, of if it is below 4, as it is for most Americans.

The Omega-3 Index Plus Test costs $74.95. Go to their website at OmegaQuant.com and order the test. They will send you the test kit. It's very easy:

  1. Follow their written instructions on scheduling and shipping, etc.

  2. You poke your finger with the lancet they supply and put the drop of blood on the blotter paper.

  3. Ship it back to them in the postage paid envelope provided.

  4. They will send you a detailed written report.

This report will tell you your ratio between omega 6 and omega 3. Most sick Americans have a ratio of 15:1. You want your ratio to be 5:1 or less. Get the test done and find out where you stand.

CW, I am wondering if our EFA blood levels fluctuate through the day or from day to day depending on our supplements/diets - re: accurate blood tests. Thanks!

Not on this test. There is no fluctuation because they are actually measuring the amount of EPA and DHA in the red blood cell membrane. If we measured actual blood levels, it would fluctuate as you suggest. But the red blood cells are replaced, about 1% per day. The red blood cells produced on any given day, have the amount in your blood on that day. When you measure how much is in the actual red blood cell membranes, you are getting an average of the last 100 days. Hence when you make a change in diet or supplementation, you should wait 4-5 months before retesting.

Insurance companies could save a lot by paying more for helping people to stay healthy than just paying for correcting all the problems they could have prevented.
